Sandblasting and Coating a Steel Tank in Our Shop

Recently, CIP successfully completed sandblasting and coating a steel tank and frame in our Shelbyville Sandblasting and Paint Shop. The tank, which was made for use in the oil fracking industry, measured 8 feet by 30 feet and the frame measured 8 feet by 50 feet. The project took about three weeks from the time our client delivered the tank until completion.

While CIP is perfectly capable of doing large jobs onsite, this was a project better suited to our shop. As with most fabrication projects, it was better to complete the tank prior to installing it in the field. By preparing the tank and coating it in the shop, we had better control over environmental concerns.

Challenges of this Project

The main challenge of this project was the fact that the tank’s interior, the tank’s exterior, and the frame all had to meet different coating specifications, and each required unique prepping. Here are the details for each component:

Tank Interior 

  • Abrasive blasted to SSPC SP-10 Near White Metal Blast
  • Applied Denso Archo 453HT Airless @ 20-40 DFT. This is an Epoxy Novolac lining specifically designed to handle the harsh environment of the petroleum industry.

Tank Exterior

  • Abrasive blasted to SSPC SP-6 Commercial Blast Cleaning
  • Applied one coat Carboline Carboguard 690 Epoxy @ 5-8 mils DFT
  • Applied one coat Carboline Carbotherm 551 @ 40 mils DFT
  • Applied one coat Carbocrylic 3359 DTM

Tank Frame

  • Abrasive blasted to SSPC SP-6 Commercial Blast Cleaning
  • Applied one coat Carboline Carboguard 690 @ 5-8 mils DFT
  • Applied one coat Carboline Carbothane 134HG @ 2-3 mils DFT
